Why not…

Fair question. Six honest answers.

There are good alternatives to Mosterd. Here is where each of them wins — and where it stops.

…just use a standard package?

If one fits, use it — sincerely. Standard software is cheaper than anything custom, including us.

The problem is the 20% that doesn’t fit: the workflow you simulate in spreadsheets next to the package, the field that lives in someone’s head, the report assembled by hand every month. When that 20% is where your risk or your margin lives, “almost fits” is expensive.

…keep it in spreadsheets?

Spreadsheets are where every good process starts — and where it quietly breaks. Versions diverge. Formulas fail silently. Nobody knows which copy is current, and an audit becomes archaeology.

A register that matters needs one truth, access control, and history. That is precisely what we generate.

…hire a custom development agency?

You’ll get professional software — and a relationship you can’t leave. The knowledge of how your system works lives in their heads; what you own is a codebase you can’t read. Every change is a quote.

With us, what you own is the model: a complete, readable specification of your system, in your repository. Any competent party — or any modern AI — can read it and explain exactly what your system does. We stay because we’re good, not because leaving is impossible.

…build it ourselves with AI?

AI has made writing software cheap. It hasn’t made owning software cheap: security patches, migrations, backups, hosting, performance at scale — for years. A generated codebase is still a codebase, and from day one it’s yours, including the parts nobody has actually read.

We’d rather you point AI at your domain than at plumbing — that’s literally how our platform is designed. The long version of this argument is in the whitepaper, written for your technical advisor.

…use an AI app builder, or a backend platform?

Different tools for a different goal — and worth being precise about.

AI app builders

Lovable and similar tools turn a prompt into a working app in an afternoon. Impressive, and faster than us at getting to a first screen. What you hold afterwards is a generated codebase: yours to patch, secure, migrate and understand for as long as your business runs on it. It starts ageing the day it’s made. Our model doesn’t — the application is derived from it continuously, so the description and the software can’t drift apart.

Backend platforms

Supabase and Firebase give you a managed database, login and APIs. Excellent foundations — for a team that intends to build the application on top. The screens, rules, workflows and reports are exactly what they leave to you, and exactly what we generate.

If your goal is to build software and you have the team to own it, use those tools. If your goal is to have a register that’s still correct in ten years, owning less of it is the point.

…worry you’ll be locked into Mosterd?

The most important question on this page. Three answers.

Your data: exportable in full, any time. Your model: readable, complete, and yours. Our principle: we refuse to sell software that holds data hostage — explicit exit tooling is on our public roadmap, and it will grow, not shrink.

Ask us this question in person; we enjoy answering it.

Still sceptical? Good.
